There are two ways to become a Senator!
Run for Office:
Students run for seats in the Senate in elections. Freshmen are only eligible to fill at-large Freshmen Senator positions. These freshmen-specific elections are held in September of each academic year, along with general at-large Senator seats. Elections for all Senators representing specific Colleges are held in March of each academic year. To run in each election, students must complete a Candidate Nomination Form and attend a candidate orientation meeting. Visit our OrgSync page to complete this form.
Fill a Vacancy:
A student can fill a Senator seat that either fails to be filled during elections or becomes vacant during the academic year. To fill a vacancy, students should first complete an online application. This online form can be found on the OrgSync page for the Student Government Association. Afterwards, the Committee of Internal Affairs will contact the candidate in order to set up an interview time with the full committee. Should the Committee favorably recommend the candidate following the interview, the candidate will be required to attend the following Senate General Meeting. There, the entire Senate will vote to confirm or dismiss the candidate. Confirmation of a candidate to the vacant Senate seat is contingent upon a three-fourth supermajority vote in the candidate's favor.
