BLM Mural

The SGA Black Lives Matter mural is a standing mural painted and created by UNC Charlotte Students. Although Black Lives Matter started and is associated with police brutality, this mural is much more than that. Our community faces more than just police brutality.  The purpose of this mural is to show the love and value of our black and brown students on campus. It is to educate those who want to learn more about the community.

UNC Charlotte administration, faculty, staff, athletics, and students were vocal about their support for the Black Lives Matter movement shortly after the death of George Floyd in May. In order to create and maintain a diverse, inclusive, and welcoming campus environment, it is important that members of black communities and other minority groups know and feel that they are valued and matter to UNC Charlotte.

By having a standing mural that represents black history, culture, and life during Black History Month, students will be able to engage with art that is informative, powerful, and impactful. In addition to students having an opportunity to engage with this art piece and scanning QR codes to learn more about topics pertaining to black culture, minority students will have a safe place to see their culture, heritage, and struggles represented. UNC Charlotte prides itself on its diverse student body and connection to various cultures. This art piece will allow students to express themselves and their passions, educate and engage community members, and pridefully exhibit black culture during Black History Month.
