Legal Music Downloading at UNC Charlotte

| | | | | | |

The Student Government Association of UNC Charlotte recognizes and understands the issues of illegal music downloading from its students. In the past, the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) has fined & sued UNC Charlotte students for downloading music illegally, thus forcing them to drop of school, and go into debt to finance legal fees.
Legal trouble is certainly not what we wish upon our students - there are many viable alternatives available to illegally downloading music that are safe and cost effective. In the 2007 - 2008 school year, the SGA Executive Cabinet researched alternative solutions to downloading music illegally - which led us to two endorsements:

Charlotte Scales Back Participation in ASG

Dear NC Student Body Presidents, UNCASG Leaders and Delegates:

Charlotte will no longer be attending ASG meetings as a delegation. I will continue to work with my colleagues on the Presidents Council in the greatest capacity possible. The Presidents Council is the only effective and functional service provided by ASG to the students of our state. I have arrived at this decision after multi-year discussions with past Student Body Presidents of Charlotte, current SGA officers and student leaders from across the state.

President Ritchie's Speech at Convocation

|

After returning from my research in Pisgah National Forest over the summer, I have some tough decisions to make as Student Body President upon my return to campus.

Should I begin the long path of intensive training so that I can compete for a spot on the UNC Charlotte football team next fall?

What Has SGA Done for You?

SGA Accomplishments 2006-2007
  • Created and received endorsement for The Noble Niner Code, UNC Charlotte's first ever creed outlining the ethical principals and responsible conduct expected from all members of our community.
  • Created SGA's Five Year Plan to provide consistency and direction for future SGA administrations to address.
  • Held the Official Student Football Vote which yielded the highest vote in school history with 39% of the total student body. Over half the student said they would pay up to $200 to bring football to campus.
  • Successfully lobbied for credit card systems at campus dining locations. Currently, students can use their personal credit/debit cards at almost every campus dining location to make it easier for students to purchase meals.
  • Effectively allocated over $115,000 to student organizations, the first time in school history, which directly impacted the amount of student life and activity that was seen on campus.
  • 2006-07 Campus Safety Walk yielded yet another outstanding response from Chancellor Dubois who allotted $250,000 towards improving the security of our campus.
  • Researched the effects from the new class schedule and presented the facts to the Provost and Chancellor who wrote saying, "The goal is to see 30% of the course sections scheduled this fall to include a Friday session; this compares to 13% in 2005 and just 6% in 2006."
  • Adopted the Student Savings Club (www.studentsavingsclub.com), a discount savings program for students, faculty, and staff to save at local vendors by simply presenting their forty-niner card to the cashier. Discounts include

? Cold Stone Creamery: Buy 1 "love it" creation, get 1 "love it" creation FREE
? 20% discount at the Sleep Inn Motel
? Northcross Lanes at the Lake: Buy one game of bowling or laser tag and get one free

President Ritchie Excited About 2007-2008

Dear Charlotte 49er Community,

I am excited to serve as your Student Body President during such an important and transitional time in UNC Charlotte’s history. During 2007 and 2008 Niner Nation will have the opportunity to work together as we see the release of the long-term Housing Committee’s study, the construction of a new entrance, the release of the Football Committee’s study and the planning for use of the Student Union. Along with these projects and many others we will see an increase in the value of the Charlotte 49er experience for every student and an increased pride that every alumni can have in their degree.

The Facts About Football at UNC Charlotte

UNC Charlotte does not have a football program because it is a costly endeavor. The costs will need to be paid for by students and university donors. State appropriations (paid via tuition) do not fund the athletic program. Student fees do.

About 75% of the Athletic Department's budget is paid for via student fees. A significant contribution in the form of increased student fees would be needed if UNC Charlotte started a football program.
